Guidance

Five subjects I write about, with one aim: keeping gambling a pastime.

  1. Point 1

    Responsible gambling

Setting time and money limits, and recognising when to stop.

  2. Point 2

    Harm prevention

The signs that a problem is starting, and what can be done before it settles in.

  3. Point 3

    Self-exclusion

How self-exclusion programmes work, and how to ask for one.

  4. Point 4

    Player protection

What operators must offer, and what a player is entitled to expect.

  5. Point 5

    The Quebec market

Rules, resources and gambling options for Quebec's French-speaking players.

About

Fifteen years of listening

I studied psychology, then social work, at the Université de Montréal. My first job in the field was on the end of a phone: a counsellor on a gambling helpline in Quebec, listening to players and their families at the moment things became hard.

I then coordinated prevention programmes for a public health organisation: workshops, campaigns and tools to spot gambling problems as early as possible.

For the last six years I have been an expert contributor to Casino.ca's French-language team. I write about responsible gambling, self-exclusion and player protection, with the same rule as on the phone: say things clearly, without judging.

Gambling should stay a pastime. My job is to help people see when it no longer is.

The garden and the neighbourhood

The rest of the time I am in the garden: sowing in spring, harvesting in autumn and a lot of patience in between.

I also volunteer in my neighbourhood. It is another way of being useful, closer to home, and a good reminder that prevention often starts with a conversation.
